What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui is a very ancient Chinese philosophy, dating back many thousands of years. It is closely tied together with the concept that all we see around us is created from infinite energy fields that link everything you can see, feel, or touch. This concept claims that because of this vibrational energy linking the universe, there is no real separation between yourself and your surroundings, including your home.

This knowledge derives from ancient Chinese poetry discussing how humans are connected to and flowing within the environment. Knowing all this to be true, Feng Shui is the philosophy that examines how these energy channels flow around your home. It examines our workspace and living environment and attempts to strike a balance with the natural world. This balance can be struck a number of ways, but will mostly involve reorienting the interior of a building and reassigning area’s functions.

Using Feng Shui, you can alter your home to offer the best personal energy for yourself. It will help you to define strong energy channels in your home and empower them, making them more harmonious. This will undoubtedly nurture and reinforce your own energy.

However, there is much confusion about Feng Shui, with many people dismissing it as a pseudoscience. There are many misconceptions carried through the media, which causes an unfortunate level of skepticism. However, Feng Shui is being accepted into the mainstream more and more, with many serious and non-psychic-focused people taking an interest, including high-flying businesses.

Essential Principles of Feng Shui

· The Commanding Position

This is described as the area of a room furthest from the door, and not in line with it. Generally, this will put you on a diagonal to the door, preferably with a clear line of sight to it.

This position is the most desirable place to spend the majority of your time while in the room. Ideally, you should determine this position, and then orientate your bed, stove, and desk in relation to it.

· The Bagua

A Bagua is a map related to the energy of Feng Shui as it flows around your home. It is related to the floor plan of your house and can be laid on top. ‘Bagua’, directly translated from Chinese means ‘eight areas’, as it splits the home into eight sections. Each section represents a different element of human life, such as wealth, knowledge, and career.

Each section also has a related color, season, number, shape, and earthly element. Surrounded by these eight, in the center of the map, is yourself. You would use these to try to separate the different aspects of your life into clear living quarters.

· The Five Elements

The five Taoist elements and their related shapes, earth (square), metal (circle), wood (rectangle), fire (triangle), and water (fluid), make up an interlinking system, representing a component of life. Feng Shui attempts to balance these five aspects of life in your home and in each Bagua and focus and strengthen energy in the areas where you would most like it to be, by adding the relevant element.

For example, the earth element represents health, general wellbeing, and your place of rejuvenation. This could very much tie into your bedroom, as is most likely. Therefore, you should consider ways in which you can add earthy colors, ceramics, stones, or crystals to the environment.

What are the benefits of Feng Shui?

This attention to energy within the home or workplace can be hugely beneficial. Indeed, people experiment with Feng Shui for a number of reasons, including love, money, health, and family.

The benefits, theoretically, are endless. Feng Shui’s main power is that it can bring strength and positivity into your life, which can then be harnessed to bring any number of positive changes.

Living in a house with poor Feng Shui is similar to wearing an ill-fitting, itchy set of clothes, all day every day. While you may be fulfilled in life generally, this poor energy flow can make you feel more limited, gloomy, and frustrated. Your living environment may be affecting you in this way without you even realizing it!

Alternately, living within a home with good Feng Shui can have an incredibly positive effect on your general outlook. In the same way that being in the presence of a happy person has a positive influence on your own energy, so too can a correctly orientated house.

If you would like to remain healthy, content, and feel fulfilled and successful, your immediate surroundings have to cultivate and support this positive energy. Rising in the morning to see your apartment laid out to maximize positive Feng Shui will allow you to start your day feeling uplifted and happy. Things should flow more easily for you, as you are being refreshed and rejuvenated by your home’s energy.

To Finish...

So, no matter what your outlook on life, or how positive you feel, Feng Shui can always help. Giving careful attention to our living quarters, and each element within them can have amazingly positive results, worth the attention of even a true skeptic.
