When your life, your possessions, or your relationships overwhelm you, chances are it’s time for a good purge. Find out what it means to purge and exactly how to do it.
In a world where we are pushed to do more, have more, and BE more, the thought of giving it all up by purging sounds terrifying. The very word “purge” sounds ominous, but purging is something people practice in order to rid their lives of excess, toxicity, or anything that doesn’t belong. Read on to explore the value of purging things, relationships, and experiences that no longer serve you!
What is Binging?
“ It’s only binge drinking if you stop.”- Anonymous
Binging is defined as indulgence in something to the point of excess. At celebrations you might have some extra wine because you're having so much fun with friends, or you might sleep in on your day off just because you can. You might watch a marathon of movies on your days off to relax, and you might have extra chocolate on your birthday. That's really not binging though. Binging is doing something so much that it causes health problems, financial problems, problems with your relationships, or problems in your living situation. Having a second helping of food occasionally really won’t hurt you, but if you eat twice as much as you should on a daily basis, you're going to get pretty sick. Binging with too much impulse shopping can make you broke or go into serious debt. Overconsuming to the point that your house is jammed full of junk that you don't use, can't remember that you got, and you never needed to begin with can create a serious fire hazard or bad fall hazards at your home. It can also accumulate filth and attract vermin. Binging might feel like abundance, but it isn’t. Read about abundance magic here: Powerful Magic and Spells for an Abundant Life
The Problem with Binging
“ Too much of a good thing can be wonderful.”- Mae West
Can there be too much of a good thing? Some people think there can’t, but other people think that there can be. If you spend too much time sitting around, you'll get stiff and sore and your muscle tone will decline. If you eat too much of certain foods, it's unhealthy for your body. Then again you can overdo so-called healthy things too. Working out too much can cause injuries. Binging on working too much and not taking enough time away from work can make your ability to focus decline and your performance drastically decrease. Another thing that can happen is it can make things boring. When our routines become so automatic that we don't have to think about them, the brain's functioning slacks off.
When we do different things and have different experiences it stimulates different parts of our brain and helps us to develop new cognitive skills. The networks in our brain that are responsible for functioning can weaken if they're not challenged and our brain actually declines. Too much television at night especially can disrupt our sleep and too much time being sedentary can make the gray matter volume in our brains decrease. This will make our cognitive abilities decrease. So binging, in some situations, can actually lower our intelligence. The mind is very complex. What We Binge On
“ Life itself is the proper binge.”- Julia Child
It's only human to want a lot of good things in our lives. We just have to make sure that we don't go too far overboard. We binge on a lot of different things. We binge on objects and possessions. We binge on experiences, and we also binge on bad relationships.
Things
Some people live to shop. Any extra money they obtain is as good as spent because they already decided they wanted before they even got the money. Their idea of a good time out is a shopping excursion and sometimes they'll travel a long distance to go to their favorite shopping destinations. Everybody loves to shop, but not everybody takes it to excess. There is actually a disorder that some people have called some Compulsive Buying Disorder. The National Library of Medicine says “ Compulsive Buying Disorder (CBD) refers to the chronic purchasing of unneeded or unwanted items, causing significant negative consequences.” They say that about 5.8% of the general population have CBD and it tends to have an early onset. Relationships
We can also binge on unhealthy relationships. When was the last time you knew someone who went from breakup to breakup and who always seemed to have a fight going on with a significant other? Do you know anyone who has the chronic need to always be “helping” people and yet constantly says that nobody appreciates their “help”? Do you know someone who jumps from one short term “best friend” situation to another one seemingly as quickly as they go through tissues? Relationships are supposed to improve our lives, not turn into a toxic cycle of binging on bad behavior, but that happens sometimes. Are you in a toxic relationship? Experiences
We can even binge on experiences. We may become addicted to doing the same thing over and over even though our kids beg us to take them someplace else. We can also binge on self isolating when it would help us to get out and spend time with other people. Sometimes we binge on doing things for the wrong people because we're easily manipulated. Is there someone who constantly gets you to cancel the things that you had planned, especially things that are important to you, because they believe they are more important? We can become addicted to doing all the wrong things when we could just as easily do the things that are right for us. Don’t waste time binging on the wrong experiences when your community needs you. What is Purging?
“ If you are unhappy with anything- whatever is bringing you down- get rid of it. Because you will find that when you are free, your true creativity, your true self comes out..”- Tina Turner
Purging is the opposite of binging. It's getting rid of things sometimes to the point of getting rid of almost everything. Other words for it are purification and cleansing and sometimes purging means you completely eliminate things. Merriam Webster online says purging is “ To make free of something unwanted.” Ritual baths, purification prayers, and sacrifice of unnecessary things are all spiritual ways of purging. Some people prefer to live life at the bare minimum, never allowing things, relationships, or experiences in their lives that they do not positively need. They say that less is more and that having too much overwhelms them. You don't want to overwhelm a Pisces, or they will disappear for a while. Purging can be spiritual or it can be physical. People who purge physical things will simply get rid of things. Some neighborhoods will have annual garage sale weekends so that everybody can clean out their houses and sell unwanted things. Other people prefer to donate things, or even sell things on the Internet. Some people will do a purge before they move to a different place of residence so that they have to take less with them when they go. Spiritually purging things might mean giving up bad habits but also replacing them with better habits. Some people believe that they have to do a purging cleanse of their bodies from time to time for their health. Purging is just getting rid of something. It can be done quickly and simply and it doesn't have to take a lot of work.
Why is Purging Good?
“ Purification. You burn everything, you burn and burn and burn, and you start over.”- Amy Zhang
Even if you're not looking to minimize things in your life, if you purge from time to time, you take out some old things and bring some new things in. Some people say that if they don't redecorate from time to time or at least rearrange their furniture, they get tired of the place where they live. Some people get tired of eating the same food over and over and need some variety in their routine. Some people don't discard relationships, but they say that making new friends enriches their lives and allows them to have new experiences. People say that things have to be discarded to make room for other things and the process makes them feel free. How to Purge
“ When someone or something no longer serves a positive influence in your life, it may be time for a purge.”- Anonymous
For some people, the thought of purging can seem unbearable. They say we have the things, people, and experiences in our lives that we love, or do we? When something no longer serves you or something better is waiting, a purge is wonderful. There are simple techniques you can use to do your own purge, and all you have to do is get started. Read on to discover how you can get rid of objects, step away from relationships that no longer benefit your life, and purge experiences that aren't helping you anymore.
Things
Maybe purging objects is the easiest. While plenty of us do have emotional attachments to the things that we love, inanimate objects don't quite have the life force in them that other people do. Some people have rules that they live by for their personal belongings, and when these things don't meet that criteria, they have to go. Other people get a possession, and decide that they want to keep it for the rest of their lives no matter what. That's a really great way to clutter up closets, basements, attics, garages, underneath the bed, storage units, and various bureaus, chests, and storage furniture.
Some people will hold on to old clothing after they gain weight saying that they want to “fit back into” those clothes again. Some people will keep every book they ever read, every assignment they turned in at school as a child, every greeting card and letter they ever received, and every gift anyone has ever given them. They may find themselves moving to larger houses multiple times to accommodate the things that they accumulate over the years. To avoid falling into this trap, come up with your own set of rules and when your things don't meet the criteria, simply get rid of them.
If it is something that you never use, you can get rid of it. If it's something that you don't want or you don't like, you can definitely get rid of it. If it's something that used to be very useful but you don't use it anymore, maybe somebody else can, so give it away. Things you've owned for years that are broken that you have never found the time to repair yet - you have replaced them anyways- can be discarded. Those clothes that you want to “fit back into” can go because chances are they're not in style anymore and if you lose that weight you're going to want to buy new clothes anyways. If you have a local thrift store or charity shop, you can just load the things up and take them and drop them off. Purging your house can become a good deed and what you no longer use can become things that other people use.
Relationships
Relationships can be much more difficult to discard, especially when we don't want to admit to ourselves that something is wrong. When signs start to present themselves that you have grown beyond a relationship, you are not required to stay in the relationship for old times sake. If a relationship hurts you, or it doesn't suit your life, you don't owe it to anybody to stay in that relationship. Sometimes nothing is wrong, we just grow apart from other people when our lives change and we start spending time with people who are more like the people we have grown to be. Be honest with yourself about the needs that you have in life and your emotional needs. Let go of relationships that don't suit you. Experiences
Discarding experiences that no longer suit us can just be a matter of unlearning old habits and relearning new ones. If you have discovered an unhealthy lifestyle habit, replace it with something else. If your job needs to be let go of, look for a new job and then resign. If you feel like you are in a boring routine where you do the same things day in and day out, break out of your habits and do something new, even if it's just one thing. When you discard experiences and replace them with new ones it makes purging experiences easy.
Life is made for living. Objects, relationships, and experiences should enhance our lives. When you discover that something isn't, it's time for a purge. Get rid of things and relationships that don't improve your life and replace them with things and relationships that do. You are one decision away from discarding something that doesn't benefit you and including something better in your life. So purge!
