What is Creativity?
Merriam-Webster online defines creative as “ Marked by the ability or power to create.” They define to create as “ To bring into existence,” or “To produce through imaginative skill.” A lot of people assume that this only means creative endeavors through the arts like dance, painting, drawing, sculpting, or music. However, the arts aren't the only way through which human beings create things. We create things in the kitchen when we cook or bake. We create life in the garden when we plant things and tend to them. People who build houses create homes. People who work in factories create goods. People who work in medical fields create healing. Salespeople create opportunities for their customers to buy things.
Every day people are creating something new even if we are simply recreating the same thing day after day. When musicians create music it brings relaxation and pleasure to both themselves and the people who listen to the music that they make. Dancers create beauty through movement. People who paint, draw, sculpt, and otherwise make two-dimensional or three-dimensional art create beauty in their studios. Writers create fictional and nonfictional literature to educate and stimulate the mind. People aren't the only ones who create. Animals create nests and dens so that they can have a home. They had to create food for their families. Every living thing no matter what its species is creates relationships and that creates love. Why Participate in the Arts?
The Mayo Clinic answers what the benefits are of participating in the arts. The arts are therapeutic, even for people who don't consider themselves to be artistic. One of the most important things that participating in the arts does for us is it helps us with our freedom of expression, helping us to share how we feel and think about things. It can help us to refocus our mind from things that stress us, helping us to forget about things while we focus on enjoying music, creating with color, or even using dance for exercise. Creativity is said to be therapeutic and used in the treatment of mood disorders, depression, and anxiety. The intersection of art and health: How art can help promote well-being - Mayo Clinic Press
More than just emotionally though, participation in the arts increases blood flow to the part of our brain that is associated with pleasure and it increases levels of something called serotonin. Seratonin is the chemical messenger that helps to regulate mood. If the levels are too low it can help to contribute to depression. When serotonin levels are normal you can focus better, feel more emotionally stable, and are calmer and healthier. Besides making you feel better, participation in the arts makes you think of things in new ways. Studying music, for example, is similar to learning to speak another language, which engages your mind, and studying music helps to make you a better listener.
But I’m Not an Artist!
Even if you're not an artist, at least studying the arts for a short time will help you. Remember back to your crafts classes when you were a child in school? Some of the kids seemed to excel in crafts while others didn't, but the arts and crafts engaged everybody no matter what. You don't even have to make art yourself to participate in it. Going to arts events and galleries to look at other people's art will make you happy because you get to enjoy the beauty of it.
Going to concerts to listen to music is relaxing and pleasurable for everybody. How would we decorate our homes if artists didn't create beautiful pictures, or gorgeous fabrics to make our furniture and linens out of? How would we know how to dress fashionably if designers and artists didn't produce nice clothing for us? Someone decides what artwork to put on your dinner plates and how to decorate your favorite restaurant. Someone decides what color to paint houses and walls, and someone decides how to decorate the home. Even if you're not drawing, dancing, making music, or making art yourself, on some level, you are participating in the arts. Librans love beauty and are well known for surrounding themselves with it. But I Can’t Make Money Doing It!
There are some creative people who quit creating. Sometimes they worked for years to try to make it as professional artists, and they couldn't make enough money doing it so they quit. That is a mistake. If you are a creative person, that's just who you are, and it is your nature to create. If you stop doing that, you lose a part of yourself. Not everybody who is creative earns money creating. That doesn't mean that you're not good at it and it also doesn't mean that nobody likes what you create. It just means that until you can get a job earning money with your creative talents, you will have to work a job just to pay bills, and create on the side for yourself. You may have to begin creating again. Read about rebuilding and starting again here: A New Beginning- Rebuilding Your Life
Not everybody becomes rich or famous for their art, and that's okay. Not everybody earns any money at all for their art and that is okay too. Everybody who is artistically talented naturally has the need to express that. Maybe your paintings don't end up selling for a lot of money at the gallery, but you can display them with your local Arts Council. Maybe your writing didn't get published with your favorite publishing house, but you can contribute to a volunteer blog. Maybe you didn't get the job with a big name dance company that you wanted, but you can teach dance in your hometown. If you have the natural ability and the arts, you must create even if you don't earn money doing it. If you have stopped creating, you might envy the people who do, but envy isn't always a bad thing. Find out how envy can be good here: Why Being Envious Can Be Good for You
Creativity and Problem Solving
Even people who are not gifted in the arts will benefit from engaging their mind creatively. That's because creative thinking helps to solve problems, but how? If you think creatively, you will think of new ways of doing things. Some problems begin because change is needed. It can be very difficult for some people to think of a new way of doing something. The creative mind will see solutions or at least will have ideas of things that can be tried. Creative problem solving helps out in the workplace, in your friend and family circles, and in your community. Families can create problems that call for creative problem solving. Engineers and designers use their problem solving to structure buildings and roads around historic landmarks so that history remains intact but modern progress can still continue. Parents are constantly having to come up with new ways to take care of their kids. If you have a reduction in your income, budgeting, cost cutting, and downsizing are creative ways that you can create solutions while you find a way to increase income. Even when you are cooking at home, if you forgot to pick up an ingredient, creative problem solving will help you to open your cabinets and find a substitute ingredient. Every day there is an opportunity to use creativity to problem solve. If you have the ability to do this, you will be very valuable. Creative thinking can help with conflict resolution. How to Unlock Your Creativity
Maybe you don't think you're a creative person, but you are. There are some things that you can do to unlock your creativity and get you in touch with it. Simple things like writing in a journal, rearranging a room, or doodling will get the creative juices flowing and engage the creative part of your mind. Read on for some tips to unlock your creativity.
Journal
Some people find writing too intimidating because they think they have to write a best-selling novel the first time they write anything at all. Writing is just putting on paper the thoughts that go through your mind or the words that you would say. So, pick a topic, and journal. Write about simple things like your favorite food, a wonderful place to visit, or just something that you don't like. The purpose of journaling is to get your thoughts out and then go back and read them. Get started!
Take a Class
People who have never participated in the arts can take a class to get started. Something very popular right now is paint and sip classes. Wine is provided, and an instructor shows everybody how to paint the exact same picture. Maybe you don't like wine, and you'd prefer to take dance classes. Music lessons, drawing classes, sculpting classes, or just art appreciation classes will unlock the creative side of you and get your mind thinking creatively.
Rearrange a Room
Choose any room in your home, and rearrange it. That is one very easy way to engage the creative part of your mind. Does the room feel small and dark? Adding some lighter colored things and removing dark colored things will change the room drastically. Does the room feel sterile and it lacks intimacy? Add some of your favorite things. All rooms in your home should contain your favorite things, so add them to create intimacy.
Make a Collage
Creating something doesn't have to be difficult. Get some thick construction paper, old magazines, scissors, and glue. Start cutting things out of the magazine that you like and glue them together on your construction paper to create a piece of artwork. It's fun, makes good use of old magazines, and you might just discover a hidden talent.
Doodle
Doodling is drawing just for the fun of it. Don't pressure yourself when you start doodling, just relax and see what you come up with. Some people are naturally good at drawing things realistically, and other people come up with creative beautiful new things that nobody has ever seen before. Some people aren't good at drawing, but they like to do it for fun. Doodle and see what happens. You might love it.
Listen to New Music
When we listen to the same music over and over, it doesn't engage our mind like new music does. Listen to some music that you've never heard before. New music comes out every day, so there is a never ending supply of it. Listen to a kind of music that you've never listened to before, or listen to music by a new musician that you've not listened to. Listen to older music by artists who you've never heard of, and listen to music from other parts of the world that you're not used to. If you are a musician yourself, study a new genre of music or a new musical instrument. It will change the way that your mind works and engage your creativity.
Think of a New Use
Think of a new use for something. Break down the old chair that you've had sitting in the corner gathering dust for 10 years, and make a shelf or a plant stand from it. Repaint an old table and set it in the garden to put your favorite plant on it. Use clean flower pots to serve dinner in, or paint them and glue them together to make garden ornaments. Break up old China plates, and create mosaics from them. Using things and unconventional ways will help to unlock your creativity.
Change a Recipe
We can become set in food habits, eating the same things over and over. If you cook, you might cook something exactly the way that you were taught, and never deviate from a recipe. Change a recipe. Add or remove an ingredient, and to see if it makes it better or worse. If you make your own BBQ sauce and you always use honey, try molasses instead. Fry your popcorn in a new kind of oil, or add blueberries to your peach cobbler to see what a wonderful combination you come up with. You might create the best recipe yet.
Creativity isn’t just for professional artists who earn a lot of money in the arts. It’s for everybody. Everyone can engage in a creative outlet to express themselves and discover parts of their talents, personalities, and minds they did not know existed. Creative thinking is an important skill to learn and is used in business, in personal relationships, and in everyday life for problem solving. So, paint, draw, dance, sing, and sculpt even if you’re not great at it. It will engage your creative mind and bring out all the best in you.
